Meet the 2degrees Team - Greg Jackson
Ever wonder what it's like to be a visual designer? Apparently, it's not just macs, Starbuck coffees and hipster beards! In our latesest interview, we sat down with our inhouse designer from the development team – Greg Jackson, to find out more about how he ended up at 2degrees.
What do you do at 2degrees and how long have you been here?
I’m the visual designer at 2degrees and have been here almost 2 years now. I predominantly work on product, both the 2degrees platform and the new M2030 bee tool, which is great. I also occasionally help out on marketing material when the need arises.
Where are you from originally?
As part of a very diverse and international team, I hail from the exotic climes of Hertfordshire.
Tell us about your career path, how’d you get here?
I was drawn to art and design at school because I enjoyed creating things. My school was very focused on maths and science, which sadly meant the creative disciplines weren’t promoted as a sensible career path. Despite that, I knew it was what I wanted to do, so this only spurred me on work harder and make a success of it.
I went on to do a foundation course at Central St Martins (world famous arts and design college and part of University of the Arts London), progressing to a degree in graphic design. I also studied abroad in San Francisco, which was a fantastic experience. It’s hard to go wrong when your bus stop is on the beach!
To strengthen my CV I interned in the design studio at Liberty London whilst completing my degree. I then landed my first job straight out of university at Pearson, the world’s largest educational publisher. I worked there for 3 years before coming to 2degrees.
Why did you want to work with 2degrees?
I came to work at 2degrees because a former colleague of mine was working here and told me how much she enjoyed it. I freelanced here for a while and when they offered me a permanent position I jumped at the opportunity. 2degrees is a relatively small company with big ambitions, and it’s certainly a nice change of pace (and culture) from a multinational with 40,000 odd employees.
What is your favourite aspect of the 2degrees culture and values?
It has to be the table football! … just kidding.
One of the main reasons I joined 2degrees and continue to enjoy working here is the team (but don’t tell them that!). We all have very exacting standards, which means we are constantly looking at ways we can improve. I think that’s very important in a technology company, especially one working in such a challenging field as ours.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work most of my time is spent playing national league hockey, that’s the second tier in the country so it’s quite demanding on my time. When i’m not doing that i’m either honing my DIY skills around my new flat or attempting to learn French, although the later has been somewhat neglected of late.
